I am on diet, but why am I not losing weight?

If you are not losing 4-5 lbs a week while on our Holistic hCG Diet, follow this 4-step trouble-shooting process.

  1. Do you feel hungry in the evening hours?  If yes, click here.  When you are hungry, esp. in the evening hours, you tend to eat more and your metabolism tends to be slower.
  2. Do you feel tired and sluggish during the day?  If so, your metabolism may be too slow, or you need medication adjustment or you may not have followed the diet correctly (e.g., not drinking enough water or not take our mineral vitamin tablet).
    1. Hormone imbalance can be a major factor why we are not losing enough weight.  The balance of hormones from the thyroid, adrenal glands, ovaries or testes and the pineal gland plays an important role in  our health and our body weight.  We can test these hormones to trouble shoot what may be your problem.  We often start by doing a screening test that covers the above systems.  If necessary, we then expand to test more comprehensively.  Call 803.233.3420 or email Dr. Cheng at DrCheng@DrWLC.com to request the screening test.
  3. Do you have any side effects or difficulties while on our Holistic hCG Diet?  Insomnia, constipation, upset stomach, etc are some of the possible side effects.  If you have any of these, we may need to adjust your medications.
  4. You may not have followed our dietary instructions correctly.  If you do not follow our dietary instructions, you may get either too many bad calories (carb and fat), not enough protein, not enough water, not enough dietary fiber, etc, resulting in side effects or difficulties.

If your answers to questions 1, 2 and 3 are NO, then most likely the problem is your diet.  Please following the following procedure:

  • Weigh in online to record your current weight (try to weigh at the same time of day, with similar amount of clothing and on the same scale).
  • But 3 boxes of protein supplements (bars, soups etc), from our offices (or online).  Eat one protein bar for breakfast, lunch and supper.  Drink plenty of water, eat 2 or more servings of green veggies.  (Read our dietary instructions again for more details).
  • Do not eat any of your own foods (no chicken, fish or pork, rice, bread, or any snacks).
  • Weigh in again online every other day.
  • At the end of the week, log in online to see your own weight chart, to see how much weight you have lost.
    • If you have lost more than 4-5 lbs, then your problem is your diet, i.e., you didn’t follow our dietary instructions.  Solutions: Read the instructions and follow them.
    • If you lost less than 2-3 lbs, then your metabolism is too slow.  Schedule an appointment to come in to see me.

If you still can’t figure out what may be your problems, please call 803.233.3420 to schedule an appointment to talk to me.

Water Pill (Herbal Diuretic and Maxzide)

Why do we use a water pill on the diet?

Water pills are used to:

  • Enhance your metabolism.  Water to your body is like oil to your car.  If you don’t have enough oil in your car, or if you have dirty oil in a car, you will have lower gas mileage (=lower metabolism to our body); engine damage.  The engines of our body are in every cell.  For these molecular “engines” to function properly, we need sufficient and clean “oil” that is water.  While we change our car oil every once a while.  When was the last time you took your body to a “mechanic” for an “oil” change?  The only ways for us to change our body’s water are to drink plenty of clean water (to push water in) and use diuretics (they help you to urinate more) to help you to drain your body’s water.  So if you drink plenty of clean water and urinate more often, you are changing your body’s dirty “oil” and you are improving.
  • We use either an Herbal Diuretic or a Maxzide to achieve the above goals.  A H. Diuretic is milder, whereas Maxzide is a bit stronger.  We usually start a patient on herbal diuretic first.  If the patient doesn’t respond well (increased urination frequency without causing discomfort or disturbance to lifestyle), then we may switch over to Maxzide.

Trazadone and Fluoxetine

Both Trazadone and Fluoxetine are SSRIs and they are part of our weight loss protocols.  SSRIs are known as anti-depressants.  However, when used for anti-depression, the dosage is usually much higher.  SSRIs are often used for other clinical conditions, other than depression.  One such example is the use of Prozac to help reduce women’s PMS symptoms.

The desired effects of Trazadone or Fluoxetine in our diet plans include:

  • Helps to reduce your stress level;
  • Helps to reduce your cravings of foods.

Potential side effects.  Although at the very low doses that we use, these side effects are infrequent and mild.  These mild side effects will go away after discontinued use.

  • Sleepiness, tiredness, altered sex drive (increase or decrease).
    • Trazadone is also used as an sleep aid.  Insomnia is one of the common side effects when one takes appetite suppressants.  The use of Trazadone helps to alleviate the insomnia problem.  Trazaone also tends to increase the sex drive, rather than decrease it.  Some people may feel a bit groggy in the first few days after being on Trazadone, but usually this improves.  If no improvement is seen in a week or so, we may need to decrease the dosage.
    • Fluoxetine doesn’t cause morning grogginess as much, but it tends to decrease sex drive, esp. in men.  It is a great medication to reduce stress level.

Please report to us any undesired effects.  We may need to adjust the dosing and timing of these meds to achieve the best results.  Please fill out an online follow up report or email us.  Thanks.

How to choose foods for weight loss and for weight maintenance.

For weight loss, follow these instructions.

  1. The 1:10 Rule:  Anything you put in your mouth should meet this 1:10 Rule.  The 1:10 Rule is: for every gram of protein, the total calorie amount should be 10 or less. Most of food packages come with nutrition label.  For example, in a grocery store you are looking at a yogurt (I know Publix sells Chobani yogurt).  The label reads the total protein is 14 grams and the total calorie is 140 calories per serving.  Serving size one container.  The protein: calorie is 14 : 140 = 1:10.  So this is a good food to eat.
  2. The 500 Rule:  the total daily calorie allowed is 500.
  3. The 5 lb/wk Rule: You should expect to lose ~5 pounds per week.  If you didn’t lose 5 lbs or more, you didn’t follow Rules 1 and 2.  You need to ask yourself why you couldn’t follow
  4. But it may also be that you are hungry or you are craving or you have side effects.  If you didn’t follow the Rules 1 and 2, then stick to these rules

For weight maintenance, follow these intructions.

  • The 1:15 Rule: Read the nutrition label on the package of a food you want to buy.  For every 15 calories, you should see at least 1 gram of protein.  For example: if a food has 5 grams of protein and 150 calories per serving, then the ratio is 5:150 or 0.5:15.  It has less than 1 gram of protein per 15 calories.  It is not an ideal food for weight maintenance.

Jason H. lost 22 lbs in 1 week!

Jason came in today after 1 week on the holistic hCG plan.  He lost 22 lbs in a week! He feels good and doesn’t have any significant side effects.  He does feel the pulse rate to be a bit faster and slightly nauseous.  After going over the way he takes the medicines, we found out that he was taking the T-Gram multi vitamin mineral tablets (the big dark brown tablets) in the morning.  T-Gram tablets are meant to be taken at dinner time with food.  It may cause stomach irritation.
